Where do we fit?

Aotearoa New Zealand has a proud history of civic-activism and campaigning. From being the first country where women won the right to vote, to the Springbok tour, citizens have taken a stand when they’ve seen injustice in our country.

We’re proud of that history, and of the people and organisations that have been involved throughout these fights.

The Movement looks to take advantage of the power of online-organising, and the the ability to take huge action at super-fast speeds to supplement and amplify the campaigns of the amazing groups around Aotearoa who are already driving positive, progressive policy change.

What we are

We are a nimble, outcome driven group of passionate individuals who recognise opportunities to use our collective power – people-power – to jump on issues as decisions are being considered or made, to ‘tip’ them in a progressive direction.

That means there will often be no more than a matter of hours between an opportunity presenting itself, and our members jumping in and taking action: wehther that’s signing a petition in our thousands to deliver to the decision makers; crowdfunding to buy billboards in strategic locations; or writing individual letters to explain to decision makers why we hope they’ll make a decision in a certain direction.

We’re fast paced and impactful. We’re focused on results that make Aotearoa New Zealand a more progressive country, for everyone.

What we are not

We are not a single-issue campaigning organisation, policy experts, or the sole-cause of wins.

We aim to be movement-generous; to add value to campaigns which people and organisations may have spent years working on. We rely on the policy expertise of other organisations: we see our role as bringing the numbers to campaigns, to amplify and tip decisions in our favour.

When we win campaigns, it will almost never be because of our work alone. In fact, we’re likely to have played a small role in any decision going our way. But that’s not to diminish our power: we believe that without the action of our members and the flexing of our collective people-powered muscles, many decisions which would otherwise have gone against us. By working together, we win more.
